Al-Mustapha Rejects Military Takeover Amid Protests

Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to General Sani Abacha, has condemned calls for a military takeover amid the current hardship protests related to fuel subsidy removal. Al-Mustapha stressed that democracy must remain in Nigeria, rejecting any notion of military intervention in political affairs.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, Al-Mustapha criticized both the parliamentary and presidential systems of government practiced in Nigeria, arguing that they do not fit the country’s historical and cultural context. He advocated for a unique democratic system tailored to Nigeria’s needs, rather than copying models from other countries.

He urged coup agitators to focus on supporting military professionalism and subordination to democratic values, emphasizing that Nigeria should develop a domestic system of governance that aligns with its cultural and historical realities.
