Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lawyer for IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, has raised concerns about the threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty due to excessive foreign borrowing. He warned that Nigeria and its citizens could be subjected to foreign judgments if the government continues to take on more debt. This warning comes after a French court ordered the temporary seizure of three Nigerian presidential jets in Paris as a result of unpaid debts.
Ejiofor criticized the lack of attention to the government’s borrowing practices, stressing that the situation could lead to serious consequences for the country. He urged the government to prioritize accountability and reduce the cost of governance to avoid further complications related to foreign loans.
He highlighted the recent seizure of Nigeria’s assets as an international embarrassment and a sign of the dangers posed by the country’s mounting debt. Ejiofor cautioned that if this trend continues, Nigeria’s assets and even its citizens could be at risk of being tied to foreign judgments.
