Manchester United has confirmed the departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy, as Ruben Amorim begins his tenure at Old tafford, with no place for the Dutchman on the new coaching staff.
Van Nistelrooy had stepped in as interim manager following the dismissal of erik ten Hag and secured a final win against Leichester on Sunday, positioning the team well for Amorim’s arrival during the international break.

Despite his successful stint – winning three of his four games – Van Nistelrooy had expressed a desire to remain at United under Amorim’s leadership. However, with the Portuguese coach set to bring two assistants from Sporting OP, it was announced that Van Nistelrooy, along with three of Ten hag’s staff, would be leaving the club.

Van Nistelrooy, who previously managed PSV Eindhoven during the 2022/23 season, had returned to Old Tafford over the summer, stating that United was the only club where he would accept an assistant role. Although he went unbeaten as caretaker, posting a remarkable 75% win rate, his tenure ended with the arrival of Amorim. He was highly regarded by the players, with Casemiro calling him a “legend” and noting it was “pleasure” to work with him.

On Sunday, Van Nistelrooy mentioned his intention to speak with Amorim the following day, but those talks concluded with his departure. United issued a statement saying: “Manchester United can confirm that Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club. Ruud rejoined in the summer and has taken charge of the team for the past four matches as interim head coach.

“Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend. We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford.
“Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have also departed and we wish them all well for the future.”

Other coaches leaving alongside Van Nistelrooy include Ten Hag’s assistant, Hake, who had joined from Go Ahead Eagles, as well as goal-keeping coach Van Rouwelaar and performance analyst Morel. While Amorim’s backroom staff has not been officially announced, United’s decision to part ways with these four coaches paves the way for the upcoming appointments.
