The House of Representatives has summoned INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to explain delays in conducting bye-elections for vacant national and state assembly seats. This decision came after a motion raised by Jafaru Leko of Bauchi State during Tuesday’s plenary.
Leko cited constitutional provisions requiring bye-elections within a month of a seat being declared vacant. He warned that INEC’s delay is disenfranchising citizens and undermining democratic processes, raising concerns over proper representation for affected constituencies.
The House directed its Committee on Electoral Matters to investigate and demand a detailed explanation from INEC, with a report due within four weeks for further action.
