Jonathan Vatsa, a relative of the late General Mamman Vatsa, has strongly criticized former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), over his brother’s execution, calling it unjust and unnecessary. Reacting to Babangida’s claim in his autobiography that the decision was for national security, Jonathan insisted that Vatsa was denied a fair trial and executed in haste before he could appeal the ruling.
He argued that the military tribunal’s verdict was not about justice but about eliminating a perceived threat. According to him, if Vatsa had lived, certain actions taken by the regime would not have been possible. He also dismissed Babangida’s recent apology for the annulment of the June 12 election, saying it could not undo the damage caused.
Jonathan further stated that Babangida owed Nigerians more than just apologies—he should seek true restitution. He urged the former leader to acknowledge past wrongs and take steps to correct them while he still has the opportunity.
