Pope Francis Stable but Still at Risk, Doctors Say

Pope Francis is responding to treatment for pneumonia and a complex lung infection, but his doctors caution that he is not yet out of danger. The 88-year-old pontiff remains in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where his medical team has strengthened his drug therapy to combat bacterial and viral infections in his respiratory system.

Doctors confirmed that the infection has not spread to his bloodstream, reducing the risk of severe complications. However, he will likely remain in the hospital for at least another week as his condition continues to be monitored. Francis is receiving oxygen support when needed and has been able to sit up, work, and maintain a good appetite.

Despite his hospitalization, the pope has continued his duties, including appointing bishops. While there is no formal Vatican protocol for an incapacitated pope, Francis has not indicated any plans to step down, following the precedent set by his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI.
