Jamiu Abiola, son of the late Chief Moshood Abiola, has dismissed renewed calls for an investigation into General Ibrahim Babangida’s role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. In an interview with Punch, Jamiu argued that too much time has passed, and most of the key players—both good and bad—are no longer alive. According to him, if a probe were necessary, it should have been conducted during Olusegun Obasanjo’s presidency when democracy was more stable.
For those seeking a deeper understanding, Jamiu recommended his book, The President Who Never Ruled, which details the events surrounding the annulment. However, he emphasized that the best way to honor his father and Kudirat Abiola is not through political inquiries but by fostering national unity. He urged Nigerians to reject tribal and religious divisions when choosing leaders, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s call for national cohesion.
While Jamiu acknowledged that posthumous honors for his parents would be appreciated, he believes their true reward lies in the afterlife. Expressing deep faith in divine justice, he declared that those responsible for their deaths would ultimately face eternal consequences. “Every single one of those who cheated and killed them will burn in hell forever and ever by the special grace of God,” he concluded.
