The United States has condemned threats against Catholic Bishop Wilfred Anagbe and Reverend Father Remigus Ihyula for speaking out about killings in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. The two religious leaders had testified before the United States House Foreign Affairs Committee on March 12, highlighting the targeting of Christians in the region.
Reports indicate that the threats began even before their testimony. Bishop Anagbe received warnings from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Father Ihyula was alerted about a possible arrest warrant for Anagbe upon his return to Nigeria. The United States Mission in Nigeria has called for respect for the clerics’ right to speak freely without fear of retaliation.
