Abdulsalami Abubakar Raises Concerns on Military Coups

Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, Nigeria’s former Head of State, spoke out about the worrying trend of military takeovers in West Africa, stressing that such coups don’t happen without political involvement.

In an interview with The Sun Newspaper, Abubakar, who played a key role in Nigeria’s transition to democracy, discussed the recent coup in Niger and its implications.

He pointed out that a lack of equity and justice in government, along with internal strife within political parties, create conditions ripe for military intervention.

Abubakar highlighted the importance of democratic practices to prevent such interventions and expressed concern over the role of civilian stakeholders in facilitating military coups.

His remarks come in the aftermath of the coup in Niger, which led to the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum and drew attention to the need for regional and international cooperation to address such crises.
