Abia state gov advises residents to Reduce alcohol, protein intake, monitor blood pressure against heat

The Abia State Government has voiced concern over the recent climatic changes that have resulted in heat waves throughout the day and at night through the Department of Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment and Urban Renewal.

The existing circumstances have a number of negative repercussions, including heat rashes, chicken pox outbreaks, dehydration, which can cause fainting, and mental stress.
Meningitis, skin cancer, and, in the worst instance, death are also linked to heat waves.

In a news release issued by the Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, the State Government noted that Nigerians had received advice from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on how to get ready for changes in weather patterns.

Therefore, in order to reduce the risks related to the heat wave, the statement recommended Abia natives and other locals to follow the experts’ suggestions.

The commissioner stated that the recommendations include consuming less alcohol and caffeine, increasing water and hydration, and limiting intake of meals high in protein, which raise metabolic activity.

The commissioner said that fruits and fresh foods are preferable substitutes.

The State Government further stated that the NIMET recommendation advised the inhabitants to take a cold bath before sleeping at night, stay inside between 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and constantly check their blood pressure.

The State Government has issued an advisory in response to reports of heat rashes and chicken pox in children and adults that are linked to the present hot weather.

Additionally, Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, a consultant nephrologist in the state, stated that the elderly and pregnant are the groups most impacted by the heat wave.

He continued by saying that the heat can also harm the medications’ quality at pharmacies.
