Lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has accused President Bola Tinubu of poor leadership following the recent purchase of a new presidential jet. In a series of Facebook posts, Adeyanju likened Tinubu’s behavior to that of former Military Head of State, Sani Abacha, and criticized him for acquiring luxury items such as a new jet, a bulletproof Escalade, and a yacht while urging Nigerians to endure economic hardship.
Adeyanju expressed shock at the size of the new Airbus A330, which replaced the older Boeing B737-700(BBJ) in the presidential fleet. He labeled Tinubu a hypocrite, stating that critics often fail as leaders and suggesting that the president’s actions were inconsistent with his earlier stance on economic austerity.
The new jet, purchased under Tinubu’s administration, was unveiled on Monday. According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the new aircraft was acquired to reduce maintenance and fuel costs, which had been high with the older plane. The exact cost of the new jet was not disclosed.
