Afenifere Demands Apology from Obasanjo for Ridiculing Obas

Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has strongly criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his perceived disrespect towards traditional rulers in Oyo State during a public function. Afenifere has demanded that Obasanjo issue a public apology to the monarchs for his actions.

The incident in question occurred when Obasanjo attended a road inauguration event in Iseyin, Oyo State, where he reportedly ordered the attending monarchs to stand up and sit down when he and Governor Seyi Makinde entered the venue. Afenifere, in a communique issued after its meeting in Akure, Ondo State, expressed its displeasure over this incident and condemned Obasanjo’s behavior.

The communique, read by Afenifere’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, stressed the importance of respecting traditional institutions in Yorubaland, particularly the traditional rulers, who are revered as custodians of Yoruba culture and spirituality. They are often referred to as “Igbakeji Orisa,” signifying their significant role as second only to the gods themselves.

Afenifere called for an “unreserved public apology” from former President Obasanjo to the traditional rulers, emphasizing the need to protect and preserve Yoruba traditions and institutions.

Additionally, Afenifere recommended that royal fathers be spared from the practice of standing up at public functions, similar to the protocol observed in the United Kingdom and other countries. This proposal aims to prevent any further disrespect or embarrassment to Yoruba traditional rulers.

Furthermore, Afenifere addressed the pressing issues of insecurity and banditry in Nigeria. They called on the Federal Government and security agencies to take decisive and proactive measures to address these challenges. The organization also emphasized the importance of creating employment opportunities for youths to deter them from engaging in anti-social and criminal activities. Afenifere stressed the need for swift and thorough prosecution of individuals involved in banditry and terrorism, holding them accountable for their actions.
