Former CBN Deputy Governor Kingsley Moghalu has urged Africa to break free from its dependence on the United States, calling it an opportunity for the continent to take charge of its destiny. Moghalu stated that the tough stance of former U.S. President Donald Trump should serve as a wake-up call for African nations to embrace self-reliance and independence.
This comes as a memo obtained by CNN revealed that the U.S. State Department has frozen nearly all foreign aid globally, with only Israel and Egypt exempted. The freeze affects billions of dollars in health, military, and democracy programs, many of which are critical to Africa. The 90-day suspension aims to reassess how these programs align with U.S. interests.
Reacting to the news via his X account, Moghalu wrote, “Being sidelined by Trump is exactly what Africa needs. We must stop depending on foreign aid and chart our own course. It’s time to end the dependency mindset and focus on building a self-reliant continent.” His remarks have sparked conversations on Africa’s future and its path toward true independence.
