Akeredolu Advocates Southern President

In a somber development, the governors of South-West states announced on Friday their intention to establish a committee to oversee the dignified burial of the late governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu. The respected statesman passed away in a German hospital on Wednesday following an extended illness.

During a condolence visit to the Akeredolu family in Ibadan, Oyo State, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State paid tribute to the late Akeredolu, hailing him as a courageous figure whose absence would be profoundly felt. Governor Abiodun revealed that the South-West governors collectively decided to take responsibility for Akeredolu’s funeral arrangements. A joint committee comprising representatives from the South-West states will collaborate with the deceased’s family and the Ondo State government to ensure a fitting farewell for the departed leader.

Governor Abiodun remarked, “He was a learned Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a successful second-term governor of the state. He championed the course that the presidency should come from the South, and he stayed with it among several others that he championed successfully. He will surely be missed by all of us. The vacuum he left will be very difficult to fill by everyone.”

Meanwhile, Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, declared a three-day mourning period for the late Akeredolu, during which all flags at public buildings in the state will be flown at half-mast. The governor emphasized the significant impact Akeredolu made on the political landscape, noting his dedication to advocating for a southern presidency.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State also extended condolences, joining fellow governors in a visit to the bereaved family in Ibadan. Bello praised Akeredolu as a statesman whose wisdom and guidance enriched leadership within the governors’ forum and the democratic institution in Nigeria. He urged the grieving family to cherish the enduring legacy of the departed leader.

Niyi Adebayo, the immediate past Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, added his voice to the tributes, emphasizing Akeredolu’s contribution to the ‘progressive family’ and his instrumental role in ensuring a power shift to the southern part of the country in the last general elections. Adebayo expressed condolences to the immediate family, associates, and the people of Ondo State.

As the nation mourns the loss of a prominent leader, preparations for Akeredolu’s final rites are set to be a collaborative effort reflecting the regional respect and admiration he garnered throughout his distinguished career.
