In a recent interview on Arise TV, Kolawole Johnson, Head Directorate of Research and Strategy at Act for Positive Transform Initiative, expressed concern over the tainted legacy of the late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu. Johnson attributed the tarnished image to the power struggle between Akeredolu and the newly sworn-in governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Speaking on the matter, Johnson emphasized the unfortunate exploitation of Akeredolu’s ill health for political gains. He lamented that the incident had significantly impacted Akeredolu’s legacy and the public perception of the former governor.

Johnson stated, “Whatever they did that turned his ill health into a political advantage has fallen very flat. It wasn’t just right to treat the man like that, considering what he stands for. The drama surrounding his health took a huge bite into his legacy and the perception people should have about Akeredolu as a person.”
The analyst urged politicians to learn from the lessons in Ondo State, emphasizing the need for ethical conduct and respect for individuals regardless of their political affiliations.
Recalling events from September 2023, Akeredolu had dismissed media aides attached to Aiyedatiwa amid an alleged rift between the two leaders. A political crisis ensued when Akeredolu’s prolonged absence led to Aiyedatiwa being declared the acting governor, resulting in the dissolution of the state executive council.
Aiyedatiwa, claiming constitutional authority, accused Akeredolu’s loyalists of sabotaging his administration. Subsequently, the state House of Assembly moved to impeach Aiyedatiwa, citing gross misconduct and disloyalty. Akeredolu, through a letter dated September 30, 2023, denied handing over power to Aiyedatiwa, accusing him of usurping authority.

Intervention by President Bola Tinubu and key stakeholders in the All Progressive Congress eventually reinstated Aiyedatiwa as Acting Governor, while Akeredolu took another medical leave in Germany. On December 27, Akeredolu’s demise was confirmed by the Ondo State government, leading to Aiyedatiwa being sworn in as the substantive governor immediately. The entire episode underscores the fragility of political legacies in the face of power struggles and highlights the importance of ethical governance.
