Senate President Godswill Akpabio has strongly denied accusations of undermining the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State in favor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to secure a third-term Senate bid. The allegations, made by APC stakeholders in an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, claim that Akpabio, along with APC State Chairman Stephen Ntukekpo and Petroleum Minister (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo, deliberately weakened the party to boost PDP’s chances in 2027.
The petitioners warned that if the APC leadership in the state remained inactive, members would defect to an emerging opposition coalition, jeopardizing Tinubu’s second-term aspirations. They alleged that key APC figures were working against the party, allowing Governor Umo Eno and the PDP to strengthen their hold while APC members felt abandoned.
However, Akpabio, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, dismissed the claims as baseless and fabricated. He argued that his numerous appointments of party members into key positions demonstrate his commitment to strengthening the APC, not weakening it.
