Amaechi Opposes The Idea Of Leaving Nigeria

In a recent interview on the Arise Television program, the former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, delved into the reasons behind his discouragement of the popular trend of Nigerians emigrating, commonly referred to as ‘Japa.’ Amaechi asserted that opting for ‘Japa’ might only lead to securing a typical 9-to-5 job, emphasizing the limited opportunities such roles offer.

During the interview, Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, emphasized the potential for individuals to attain political offices by remaining in Nigeria. He urged the country’s youth to actively pursue avenues that would enable them to contribute to decision-making processes, particularly those related to the nation’s economy.

“I have always discouraged people who want to leave the country. I say 9-5 is the job you can get. You may not get the opportunity we get in Nigeria. You can just wake up one day and you are already a minister or a governor. It just happens. If you are looking for opportunity, please stay back in Nigeria, but if you are looking for 9-5, safety and others, you can leave the country,” Amaechi stated.

Highlighting his commitment to honesty and fear of God, Amaechi distinguished himself from other elites and politicians in Nigeria. He expressed a firm belief in being forthright, admitting mistakes when necessary and standing by the truth, even when faced with challenges.

“The difference between me and most Nigerian elites is that I say things the way it is and I say it unknowingly. It is the way God has brought me up, and I will tell you the truth even if you put a gun on my head,” Amaechi asserted.

Refusing to comment on his political career when pressed, Amaechi served as the Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2022 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He resigned and contested the presidential primary under the All Progressives Congress but lost to Bola Tinubu, who eventually secured victory in the presidential election.
