Fifty-five people have been detained by the Amotekun Corps, popularly known as the Ondo State Security Network Agency, on charges of committing different crimes throughout the state.
State Commander of the Corps Akogun Adetunji Adeleye said the suspects were taken into custody at various sites throughout the state while presenting them at the corps’ headquarters in Akure, the state capital, on Thursday.
He stated that among other offenses, the suspects were accused of committing robbery, kidnapping, arson, and stealing. In an effort to ensure that the holiday season is free of crime, he continued, the corps has started a 24-hour operation and patrol.
“The goal of this November patrol is to make sure that Ondo State residents and commuters can enjoy the holiday season without fear,” he stated. To that end, we started a seven-day, twenty-four-hour patrol over the state’s eighteen local government districts. We started street patrols in the state capital to make sure that, in contrast to our previous march, which saw numerous incidents of shop and housebreaking, we posted Amotekun men in uniform and those who weren’t on all the streets. In order to make sure that there are no bank robberies in Ondo State throughout the holiday season, we even stationed our troops near the financial institutions.
Conflicts between farmers and herders have also decreased to 5%. Despite being unique, the event today provides an overview of the state of Ondo’s security.
The bulk of the 55 suspects we are parading have admitted to their crimes. About 250 people were really arrested, but after profiling those 250, we excluded the 55 who, in our opinion, should be judged by a court of law to determine whether or not they should be placed in correctional services or returned to society.
“I think the government should provide elaborate job opportunities,” the Amotekun chairman continued. “As we all know, the country’s economic situation is harsh and tough.” Given this, the government ought to extend palliative care to individuals who are unable to receive it.
