Strong indications suggest that Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is likely to be removed from office due to his dissenting stance on the announcement of the National Assembly’s principal officers by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
According to multiple sources, Adamu’s opposition to the appointed principal officers was seen as defiance against President Bola Tinubu’s wishes, as the National Assembly leadership allegedly received support from the presidency before the announcement.
Senate President Akpabio disclosed that Senators Opeyemi Bamidele, Dave Umahi, Ali Ndume, and Lola Ashiru were appointed Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Chief Whip, and Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, respectively.
Similarly, Abbas named Julius Ihonvbere and Kingsley Chinda as the majority leader and minority leader of the House of Representatives, representing the APC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), respectively.
Expressing dissatisfaction, the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by Senator Abdullahi Adamu, disowned the announcement, stating that the party had not officially communicated with the presiding officers of the National Assembly.
In response, a party source expressed that Adamu’s remarks were inappropriate, emphasizing that the selection of the principal officers followed extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders.
In light of Adamu’s dissent, it is rumored that the APC chairman may face consequences. President Buhari is reportedly seeking a replacement for Adamu and is expected to reveal his decision during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 11th.
