Aralola Olamuyiwa, popularly known as ‘Ara the drummer‘, shared her journey of breaking cultural barriers as Africa’s first female talking drummer. In an interview on the ‘Terms And Conditions’ podcast, Ara recalled how she defied discouragement and self-taught herself to play the talking drum, despite being told it could affect her ability to have children.
Facing skepticism from those she approached for lessons due to her gender, Ara persisted and eventually mastered the instrument. She shattered the taboo surrounding female drummers and proudly embraced her role as a cultural ambassador for the Ooni of Ife. Ara’s story exemplifies resilience and determination in the face of traditional norms.
