Armita Garawand, an Iranian adolescent, died on Saturday, a month after falling into a coma following a disputed event on Tehran’s metro, according to Iranian media.
“Armita Garawand, a student in Tehran, died an hour ago after intensive medical treatment and 28 days in intensive care,” the Borna news agency, which is linked with the youth ministry, stated.
The 16-year-old ethnic Kurd was taken to a hospital in Tehran after collapsing on the metro.
Her story was first reported on October 3 by the Kurdish-focused rights group Hengaw, which stated that she was gravely injured after an incident on the subway system.
Authorities claim she suffered a significant drop in blood pressure and denies any “physical or verbal altercations” with other passengers.
However, rights groups claim that the adolescent was badly injured following an alleged attack by members of Iran’s morality police.
It came just over a year after the death of Mahsa Amini, another young Iranian Kurd, who was arrested by morality police for allegedly violating Iran’s strict clothing code for women, sparking widespread demonstrations across the Islamic country.
According to medics, Garawand “suffered a fall resulting in brain damage, followed by continued convulsions, a decline in brain oxygen, and cerebral oedema after a sudden drop in blood pressure,” according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency on Saturday.
