Atedo Peterside – June 12 Still Haunts Some People

Atedo Peterside, founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank and Anap Foundation, has said that the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election continues to haunt some individuals. Reacting to former military leader Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey in Service, Peterside dismissed claims that Babangida was unaware of the annulment, recalling how Nigerians witnessed the election results before they were overturned.

Speaking on Channels Television, he warned that Nigeria’s elite risk “normalizing deceit” and called for elders who will uphold the truth. He recounted how, in his 30s, he protested against the annulment and had written about the “ghost of June 12,” predicting that it would continue to haunt those responsible.

Peterside insisted that Babangida’s book launch was proof that the controversy around June 12 remains unresolved. He urged Nigerians to learn from history and reject attempts to rewrite it, emphasizing that some truths cannot be ignored.
