Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, didn’t mince words as he lambasted the federal government, accusing it of perpetuating corruption within its ranks. In his May Day message, Atiku highlighted the dire state of Nigerian workers despite promises of wage increments and improved conditions.
He criticized the government’s handling of the subsidy regime, pointing out the frustration faced by Nigerians queuing at petrol stations due to the lingering impact of petrol subsidy removal. Atiku emphasized that the unilateral decision to remove the subsidy without consulting workers’ representatives showcased the government’s ineptitude.
According to Atiku, the continual increase in tariffs without addressing corruption and inefficiencies only burdens ordinary Nigerians, who end up subsidizing the system’s flaws. He lamented the erosion of workers’ rights under the current administration, contrasting it with historical figures like Pa. Michael Imoudu and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who fought against tyranny and bad governance.
Expressing sympathy for Nigerian workers’ plight, Atiku criticized the government’s neglect of workers’ concerns while projecting an image of progress to the international community. He highlighted the theme of this year’s Labour Day, urging the government to prioritize workers’ safety and health amidst a changing climate.
In conclusion, Atiku called for a shift in government focus to address the challenges faced by Nigerian workers, emphasizing the need for genuine reforms to improve their welfare and well-being.
