Prominent political figures have cautioned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against contesting the 2027 presidential election. PDP’s National Executive Committee member, Diran Odeyemi, and Labour Party chieftain, Anslem Eragbe, argue that power should remain in the South, particularly the South-South region, for equity and fairness. Eragbe insists Atiku should step aside and support younger leaders instead of disrupting Nigeria’s political balance.
Highlighting past leadership distribution, Eragbe noted that the South-South has had the shortest tenure in the presidency, with only five years under Goodluck Jonathan. He emphasized that political parties must prioritize credible candidates over financial influence. Meanwhile, Odeyemi pointed to Atiku’s 2023 bid as a key factor in the PDP’s internal crisis, suggesting that his continued ambitions could further destabilize the party.
