The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, revealed that the recent nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests have compelled the federal government to listen more attentively to the concerns of Nigerians. Speaking at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group’s National Economic Dialogue, Bagudu acknowledged that the protests highlighted the need for urgent action to improve the country’s economic situation.
Bagudu, while discussing the challenges facing the nation, pointed out that despite efforts by previous administrations, Nigeria is still not where it needs to be economically. He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu is focused on progress rather than blaming past governments, aiming to address issues such as low income per capita and underinvestment in critical sectors like oil production.
Bagudu also noted that Nigeria’s population has nearly doubled since 1999, but key sectors, like oil production, have not kept pace. He stressed the importance of transparency and alignment with the economic objectives outlined in the Nigerian Constitution to achieve the desired economic transformation.
