Barber bags 24-month jail sentence for theft

A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja sentenced a barber, Godwin Joseph, to 24 months in prison for housebreaking and stealing.

The barber, Joseph, 24, of Area 1 Garage Garki Abuja, pleaded guilty to criminal trespass, housebreaking, and stealing, but asked for compassion.

However, the Judge, Mr Aliyu Kagarko, gave the offender the option of paying an N60,000 fine and admonished him not to commit crimes again.
Mr Olisaemeka Okeke, the prosecution counsel, had earlier informed the court that the defendant had been arrested by the complainant, Mr Johnson Ewa of LEA Primary School Nunanleg Airport Road, Abuja.

The prosecutor told the court that on the same date, about 3 a.m., while the complainant was sleeping in his home, the barber broke in through the window and stole his belongings.

He claimed the convict stole two cell phones valued at N240,000, two phones priced at N50,000, a laptop for N300,000, an unknown smart wristwatch, and N200,000 cash.
According to the prosecution, the complainant apprehended the defendant while attempting to flee and brought him to the station for inquiry.

He claimed that during the police investigation, the inmate admitted to the crime, which violated sections 348, 411, and 287 of the Penal Code.
