Bello urges IG to probe pre-election violence; IG assures peaceful poll readiness

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to thoroughly investigate cases of pre-election violence and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable. The governor made this appeal during a special visit by the Inspector General regarding the upcoming November 11 governorship election.

Governor Bello emphasized the need for proper investigations, stating that criminals should not be allowed to operate freely. He expressed concern about some individuals perpetrating crimes and then running to the police as victims. The governor stressed the importance of conclusive investigations and pointed out that those evading police invitations and those alleged to have been killed by political supporters, including women and youths, should be prime suspects.

Governor Bello assured the Inspector General that his government has maintained peace and tranquility in Kogi State for over seven years. He mentioned that the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kogi holds a track record of peaceful electioneering and expressed confidence in winning the upcoming polls without resorting to violence.

The Inspector General assured that the police, along with other security operatives, are fully prepared for a free and fair election. He emphasized the commitment to a peaceful poll and urged political actors to adhere to the law, emphasizing that the police would promptly respond to any acts of violence during the election. The Inspector General affirmed the commitment to discharge duties responsibly and effectively.
