Naira Struggles Again As Dollar Hits ₦1,610

The Dollar to Naira exchange rate is rising again. On Monday, April 28, 2025, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that one Dollar officially exchanged for ₦1,599.94, up slightly from ₦1,599.54 last Friday.

However, on the streets (black market), the story is different. Many people are buying one Dollar for as high as ₦1,610, even though the CBN had earlier joined all exchange rates into one, trying to make things easier. The bank had said since June 2023 that all Dollar sales would now happen in one market, called the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window.

With this new system, the Naira now floats freely. This means its value goes up and down depending on how people buy and sell, and the government no longer fixes the price. The CBN says more updates will be shared soon to guide banks and the public.

Federal Workers Strike Over 5 Months of Unpaid Wages

0
The workers in Oyo State have gone on an indefinite strike due to the non-payment of their wage awards for the past five months. The workers, under the Federal Workers Forum (FWF), started the strike at the Federal Secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital.

Comrade Andrew Emelieze, the National Coordinator of FWF, and Comrade Itoro Obong, the Secretary-General, announced that the strike will continue until their demands are met. They are asking for the payment of the five months’ arrears, the implementation of a 40% peculiar allowance, and the settlement of other outstanding wages.

Despite heavy security presence, the workers gathered peacefully across the country, showing their unity in the protest. The workers had previously given the federal government a 21-day ultimatum, but with no action taken, they have now begun the indefinite strike.

PDP Leader Slams ₦10B Solar Plan for Aso Rock

0
Umar Sani, a leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticized the government’s plan to spend ₦10 billion on a solar power project for the State House. He called it a waste of resources, especially when many Nigerians are struggling with power shortages.

The government defended the move, which was criticized by PDP comparing it to the solar power used at the White House. But Sani argued that instead of securing energy for just the President’s office, this money could have been used to improve power for the entire country, which suffers from constant electricity issues.

He pointed out that while the President gets solar power, Nigerians still face a broken power system. Sani believes the funds should be used to upgrade the national power infrastructure to benefit everyone, not just the Presidency.

Naira Drops Again As Dollar Hits ₦1,610

Dollar To Naira
The Naira has dropped again. On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the official rate from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that 1 US dollar now equals ₦1,602.63. Just last week, it was ₦1,599.93. That’s a clear sign that the Naira is getting weaker.

But it’s even worse in the black market, where the dollar is now selling for around ₦1,610. This is happening despite CBN’s decision to join all exchange rate markets into one, which they call the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window.

Since June 2023, the CBN removed limits on how people buy and sell dollars and allowed the Naira to float freely—meaning the price now depends on demand and supply. Even though this gives people more freedom to trade, it has also made the dollar more expensive for regular Nigerians.
