Chelsea legend John Mikel Obi has acknowledged Asenal’s progress under Mikel Arteta but remains skeptical about their ability to secure major trophies under the Spanish coach.
The former Super Eagles midfielder believes Arteta has yet to prove that he can lead the Gunners to significant titles such as the Premier League or the Champions League.

Despite guiding Arsenal to a likely third consecutive second-place league finish and establishing them as Champions League contenders, Mikel questions whether Arteta has what it takes to clinch major silverware.

“Has he done well for Arsenal? Yes. Has he improved Arsenal? Yes. There’s no doubt about it. Mikel Arteta has improved Arsenal from where they were before he took over,” Mikel admitted on the ObiOne podcast.
“He’s massively improved the squad, the team, the way they play, and the way the fans want to see an Arsenal team play. He’s massively improved the team.

“Now, is he the guy to take Arsenal to the next level, which is winning the Premier League, the Champions League? I don’t see that, because it’s not about competing.
“People talk about competing. Yes, Arsenal need to compete to win. No, Arsenal should be talking about winning the league, not competing to win.

“When was the last time Arsenal won it? The Invincibles in 2004? What is it now, 20 years? 21? 22? Arsenal fans keep talking about competing. No. They’ve got to win it. Win it.”
Many share Mikel’s view that it is time for Arteta to start winning trophies. Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes are fading, with Liverpool holding a 15-point advantage. However, the North London side remains in contention with the Champions League.

Following their dominant 7-1 aggregate victory over PSV, Arsenal are on the verge of reaching the quarter-finals, where they will face either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.
