Catholic Church to Make Edo Teen Killed for Resisting Rape a Saint.

The Catholic Church in Benin, Edo State, has taken a significant step towards the beatification and canonisation of 14-year-old Vivian Uchechi Ogu, who tragically lost her life on November 15, 2009. Vivian was shot dead by armed men who attempted to rape her after robbing her family. In her courageous act of resistance, she chose to face death rather than submit to sexual assault.

The issuance of the edict, a formal declaration, is a crucial milestone in the process of considering Vivian Uchechi Ogu for sainthood. It enables individuals to submit petitions, both in favor of and against her beatification, which will then undergo rigorous examination during a tribunal trial. Ultimately, a decision on her potential canonisation as a saint will be made by the leadership of the Catholic Church.

During a special mass, Most Rev. Augustin Obiora Akubeze, the Archbishop of Benin, revealed that the Pope had included Vivian Uchechi Ogu among 25 individuals worldwide to initiate the beatification and canonisation process. He emphasized that Vivian had led an exemplary life and displayed heroic courage in the face of her tragic fate.

Archbishop Akubeze stated, “Since her reputation for martyrdom and holiness has continued to increase since her death, and after having been formally requested to open the Cause of Beatification and Canonisation of the Servant of God, bringing it to the attention of the ecclesial community, we invite all of the faithful who can give valid testimony to come forth and contact the Archdiocesan Curia at the Chancery, No. 30, Airport Road, Benin City, with their information, whether favorable or contrary to the reputation of martyrdom and holiness of the aforementioned Servant of God.”

He further encouraged the public to provide any relevant materials, such as manuscripts, diaries, letters, and private writings of Vivian Uchechi Ogu, with authenticated copies being accepted for those wishing to retain the originals.

To ensure widespread awareness, Archbishop Akubeze directed that copies of the Edict be prominently displayed on the doors of selected Catholic churches and other public places for a duration of two months.

The pursuit of Vivian Uchechi Ogu’s beatification and canonisation reflects the Catholic Church’s recognition of her exceptional bravery and commitment to the faith, even in the face of a harrowing tragedy. This process allows her life and sacrifice to serve as an enduring inspiration to others.
