A solemn ceremony took place at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja as 20 gallant soldiers who lost their lives in Niger State were laid to rest. The soldiers died while on active duty, ambushed by bandits-turned-terrorists in Zungeru, Niger State. The attack on August 13 resulted in the deaths of 22 soldiers, with seven others sustaining injuries.
In response to the attack, an MI-171E helicopter from the Air Force was dispatched to evacuate the victims. Tragically, the helicopter crashed near Chukuba Village in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, leading to the deaths of all passengers on board, including two pilots and two crew members. The helicopter was transporting 14 of the soldiers’ bodies and the seven injured soldiers.
The burial ceremony was marked by rows of coffins draped with the national flag and military uniforms. The atmosphere was somber as families, friends, colleagues, and top military officers gathered to pay their respects. Tears flowed freely as the caskets were lowered, reflecting the pain and loss felt by those in attendance.
The ceremony was attended by top government officials including the Minister of Defence, the Minister of State for Defence, and the Chief of Defence Staff, as well as service chiefs, family members, and friends of the fallen soldiers. Wreaths were laid in their honor.
The family members of the deceased soldiers shared their grief and pain, highlighting the devastating impact of their loss. Many of the fallen soldiers were young and promising individuals, leaving behind grieving families and loved ones.
The Chief of Defence Staff addressed the mourners and assured them that the sacrifices made by the fallen soldiers would not be in vain. He promised that those responsible for the deaths of the soldiers would be brought to justice, emphasizing the military’s determination to hunt down terrorists and maintain peace and security in the country.
The event concluded with the presentation of the national flag to the next of kin of the fallen soldiers, marking a solemn tribute to their bravery and sacrifice.
