A branch of the Celestial Church of Christ in Lagos State is facing backlash after inviting Fuji singer, Pasuma, and street-hop artiste, Portable, to its praise night event. The flyer for the event, posted on the church’s Facebook page on Wednesday, sparked criticism from netizens who expressed disapproval of secular artists participating in a religious gathering.
Commenting on the Facebook post, Bolanle Bamidele Adewuyi wrote, “This is disheartening… Is this what you turn the Church of God to? It’s hilarious.” Other commenters, including Festus Olanrewaji Ojo and BU KO LA, echoed sentiments of shame and disappointment.
Ayo Ife humorously suggested, “The artists are not complete yet. Una for kukuma add Naira Marley. So that the soul winning can be complete!” Edafe Oghenebrume condemned the move, calling it a sacrilege in the Celestial Church of Christ and questioning the spiritual orientation of the church leadership and congregation.
Becky Wunmi Hassan Ayoade expressed concern, stating, “There is nothing they will not turn Celestial Church to.” However, amidst the criticism, some netizens indicated their intention to attend the event. Abike Ade and Abike Garment affirmed their presence, with the latter saying, “I must be there, make I come dance away my sorrow.”
The invitation of secular artists to the praise night has stirred controversy, with opinions divided on the appropriateness of blending secular entertainment with religious events. The church is yet to respond to the public reaction.
