Chelsea Falls to Wolves in Eighth Defeat

Mauricio Pochettino acknowledges the need for increased efficiency from his Chelsea side, as Wolves handed them their eighth Premier League defeat, with a victory of 2-1, in a lackluster season.

Second-half goals by Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty secured a historic win for the hosts, marking the first time in almost fifty years that they recorded consecutive league victories against The Blues.

Despite substitute Christopher Nkunku’s injury-time goal on his Premier League debut, it couldn’t salvage a point for the Blues. This loss also marked their fourth consecutive away league defeat, a feat not experienced since December 2000. Chelsea’s persistent attacking shortcomings were evident once again, having failed to convert 36 significant chances in the league this season, the highest among all teams.

Expressing disappointment, Pochettino emphasized the team’s deserving more and highlighted the impact of missed opportunities. He stressed the importance of adapting, building confidence, and demonstrating quality, emphasizing the need for goal-scoring to secure victories.

Nicolas Jackson’s lackluster performance drew criticism, evident in the cheers from Chelsea fans when he exited the game. The team now sits 10th, trailing by seven points for Europa Conference League qualification, seemingly their best achievable outcome.

The Blue’s struggles in 2023 continue, leading with 19 Premier League losses, the highest in the year. Among the big five European leagues, only Almeria (24), Werder Bremen (20), and Empoli (20) have more losses than Chelsea.

Wolves, now level on points with Chelsea, secured the victory at the expense of experienced defender Craig Dawson, who left the game in the second half with what appeared to be a significant injury.
