Chief Edwin Clark, an elder statesman, has advised President Bola Tinubu that Nyesom Wike, the immediate former governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), is not prepared to maintain peace in the state’s political crises.
Clark stated in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja that Wike’s continued activities are strong evidence that he is not ready for peace in Rivers.
According to media reports, Tinubu intervened in the crisis by issuing a ‘8-point pact’ to both parties requiring the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and his allies to withdraw all court cases pertaining to the matter, which violates the 1999 Constitution and popular opinion among Rivers people and Nigerians.
Fubara and his associates, including the Speaker recognized by the court, Edison Ehie, have followed the arrangement.
According to the statement, “The expectation is that the 26 decamped legislative members who have filed cases in court will do the same. But they refused, resulting in the ruling delivered by Justice James Omotoso on January 22, 2024, which stated, among other things, the nullification of Governor Fubara’s 2024 Budget, which was submitted, passed, and signed into law.
Justice Omotoso further stated that he based his decision on the lawmakers’ claim that there was no proof of settlement of the dispute before him.
Clark, an Ijaw leader, stated that it demonstrated clearly that Fubara obeyed Tinubu and carried out his directive in violation of the 1999 Constitution ‘for the sake of peace,’ except for what he is currently prohibited from doing by the courts, even though the majority of Nigerians were dissatisfied with the terms of the settlement.
He stated that having done all of this in violation of the Constitution, which Fubara, as Governor of Rivers State, promised to preserve, Wike cannot be considered as fostering peace in the state.
He urged Tinubu to caution Wike and enable Fubara to administer the state amicably.
