“Cleric Put in Custody for Allegedly Defiling 12-Year-Old in Owerri”

In a remarkable turn of events at an Owerri court, a story of justice and protection has unfolded. Meet Emeka Michael, a 30-year-old self-proclaimed cleric, who found himself in the spotlight for a deeply disturbing act. Amidst holiday celebrations, he allegedly engaged in an unthinkable act with a 12-year-old girl under his roof.

Gathering in the courtroom, the scene was set for a pivotal decision. Chief Magistrate Obinna Njemanze, at the helm of proceedings, showed his commitment to justice. However, he decided not to take jurisdiction directly, invoking Section 89 (b) of the Imo State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2020. This allowed for a compelling defense by J. S Nwankwo Esq, aiming to secure Emeka Michael’s release.

On the opposing end stood Nkechi Iwuoha, Counsel for the State, asserting the gravity of the offense. She spotlighted a key detail: the defense hadn’t offered a strong case for special circumstances that warranted bail. The courtroom’s atmosphere grew tense as the scales of justice hung in the balance.

In a twist that echoed throughout the chamber, the Court rendered its decision: bail denied. Emeka Michael’s fate was sealed as he was ordered to await trial behind the walls of the Correctional Center Owerri. The gavel’s authoritative strike echoed, marking a step towards justice.

But the story doesn’t end there. The date etched in everyone’s minds: October 5, 2023. On this day, the Director of Public Prosecutions’ report will hold the key to the next chapter.

Beyond the legal proceedings, an array of fierce advocates emerged to stand beside the young victim. The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Imo State Branch, made their presence felt. Led by Vice Chairperson Mrs. Phil Amaefule, Secretary Mrs. Chinyere Iwunna, and Financial Secretary Mrs. Nancy Nwabia, their collective determination fortified the pursuit of justice.

The young victim and her six-year-old brother, natives of Anambra State, embarked on a holiday journey to the house of the accused in Naze, Imo State. A supposed sanctuary turned into a place of distress, until a heroic act changed the course of events. The girl’s escape from Emeka Michael’s clutches was a glimmer of hope, facilitated by a compassionate individual who alerted the authorities through an Owerri-based radio station.

This heart-wrenching tale caught the attention of FIDA Imo’s Chairperson, Joy Nwosu-Azuama. With a dynamic EXCO team by her side, swift action was taken to champion the cause of justice for the innocent young girl.

As the days unfold and the justice system runs its course, the collective hope is that this story will stand as a testament to the power of unity, advocacy, and the unwavering pursuit of a brighter, safer future for all.
