A commercial driver was killed in Jos on Thursday, according to information provided by the Plateau State Police Command.
After work had ended, the commercial driver, known as Fwinbe Thomas, was heading home when he grazed a motorcycle rider with his car.
The driver was allegedly killed in an attack on Tudun Wada Ring Road in Jos by hoodlums who pursued him on motorcycles after the event and were enraged by it.
Alabo Alfred, the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, issued a statement on Thursday in which he both confirmed the driver’s death and denounced the criminals’ behavior.
“The Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Police Command, CP Okoro Julius Alawari, is miffed and totally condemns the unlawful killing of one Mr. Fwinbe Thomas who was found lying in a pool of his own blood along Tudun Wada Ring Road, Hwolshe in Jos,” the statement said in part.
Following a credible informant’s report of the incident on September 25, 2023, at around 2230 hours, the Police Patrol Team assigned to the Anglo-Jos Division hurriedly responded to the scene of the brutal attack. There, they discovered the victim lying in a pool of his own blood next to a Suzuki Mini Bus with the registration number KWK 536 XA, suffering multiple head injuries.
“The victim is suspected to have been brutally murdered by some hoodlums, suspected to be commercial motorcyclists known as “Okada Riders,” whose business in Jos Metropolis/Bukuru metropolis is illegal.”The victim was photographed, the car was towed to the station, and the body was sent to the Plateau Specialist Hospital, where a doctor pronounced the person dead. The body has been placed in the mortuary at the hospital for an autopsy.
The assurance that Fwinbe Thomas’ killers were still at large came from the statement.
The commissioner pleads for peace as the police are already in control of the situation, it continued. He gives the citizens of the Plateau the assurance that the criminals who committed the heinous deed will not escape prosecution since there is nowhere for them to hide in the State.
The head of the Plateau Police also issues a strong warning to those enforcing “Jungle Justice” to stop, warning them that anyone found guilty of such barbaric behavior will not be spared by the Command under his supervision.
He emphasized the necessity for civilians to let law enforcement organizations handle such matters rather than trying to enforce the law themselves.
“Investigations into this case are still ongoing, and new information will be made public in due course. “The CP also uses this method to remind people that the commonly known as Okada motorcycle use prohibition is still in effect in Bukuru and Jos Metropolis.
