“Commuters Voice Frustration: Fare Hikes and Gridlock Cause Concern”

Commuters traveling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway area are expressing frustration over a sudden increase in transport fares by commercial drivers operating routes including Berger, Arepo, Magboro, Mowe, Ibafo, and others along the road. The fare hikes are attributed to the removal of fuel subsidies and increased movement along the expressway.

Passengers have reported significant fare increases. For instance, a journey that usually costs N400 from Berger to Magboro now costs N1,000. Similarly, a passenger who typically pays N500 from Ketu to Mowe now has to pay N700. The situation has caught many commuters off guard, and some even mentioned hearing rumors of further fare increases.

Drivers have cited high demand and increased movement towards the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as reasons for the fare hikes. They acknowledge the challenging economic situation but highlight the need to adapt to survive.

The ongoing Annual Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, themed “Beyond Expectation,” has contributed to the increased traffic volume in the area. Multiple churches are holding programs along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, leading to gridlocks in areas like Ojodu, Otedola, and nearby routes.

Babatunde Farinloye, the Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, explained that the heavy traffic is mainly due to the religious activities and church programs in the region. He also mentioned efforts to manage the situation and address the resulting congestion.
