Mowe-Ibafo Area, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
Motorists traveling along the Mowe-Ibafo area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have voiced growing concerns over a disturbing trend of corpses being dumped at various locations along the route. These unsettling incidents have prompted fears of potential disease outbreaks and security threats among those who frequently use this road.
Our correspondent, during a visit to the Mountain Top University vicinity of the highway, observed a lifeless body, its form marred by burnt scars, wrapped in a blue fabric and bound with rope, carelessly left by the roadside. This grim discovery follows reports of another dumped corpse located across from the university just a day earlier, while similar cases have occurred recently in the same vicinity.
One motorist, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed concern and called upon security agencies to intensify their focus on the area. “I believe the corpse was discarded overnight, although I cannot confirm this. It was the putrid odor emanating from that section of the road that attracted attention to it. This situation suggests that the area may not be safe, especially after dark,” the motorist stated.
Another driver, known as Rasheed, highlighted the potential health risks associated with the decomposing corpse, emphasizing the need for swift removal. “The stench emitted from the deceased body is highly distressing and can lead to health issues if not promptly attended to,” Rasheed warned.
In response to these incidents, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, Omolola Odutola, encouraged residents to report such occurrences to their local Divisional Police Officer (DPO). She stressed the importance of timely information, stating, “The police can only take action when they are informed, so people should make it a priority to notify their DPOs of such matters. Often, we may not be aware of a missing person unless their family reports it.”
As for the removal of the deceased, our correspondent reached out to the Chairman of the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, Lanre Ogunsola. Mr. Ogunsola requested that a message be sent regarding the situation but, as of the time of filing this report, had not responded.
The recurring issue of corpses being dumped along this major highway has raised significant concerns, with residents and motorists alike urging authorities to take swift action to address the situation and maintain safety along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
