Motorists in Lagos have expressed concerns about the deplorable state of the Third Mainland Bridge, one of the major bridges connecting Lagos Island with the Mainland. The bridge, with a length of about 11.8 kilometers, has seen multiple rehabilitation works since its completion in 1990. The most recent rehabilitation took place on April 2, 2023, conducted by the Lagos State Government.
Despite these efforts, reports indicate that potholes are appearing on the bridge, particularly along the Obalende to Adekunle stretch. These potholes are causing traffic jams and increasing transportation costs in the area. Commuters and drivers have raised alarm over the deteriorating condition of the bridge, and some have taken to social media to express their concerns.
The Lagos State Government had previously planned rehabilitative works for the bridge in September but later postponed the project due to adverse weather conditions. The state government has not yet announced a new date for the rehabilitation.
In response to these concerns, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, opposed the idea of continuously adding asphalt to the bridge, stating that this could pose safety risks, potentially leading to vehicle overturns. The state of the Third Mainland Bridge highlights the need for comprehensive maintenance to ensure safety and minimize traffic disruptions.
