The Court of Appeal in Abuja has nullified the election of Senator Elisha Abbo, who represents Adamawa North Senatorial District. The appellate court declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Amos Yohanna, as the winner of the February 25 senatorial election.
Amos Yohanna had filed a petition at the tribunal in Yola, challenging Abbo’s victory and arguing that the election was marred by irregularities, including false entries, alterations, and vote cancellations at various polling units.
The Court of Appeal upheld Yohanna’s arguments and nullified Senator Abbo’s election. Senator Abbo, in his reaction to the court’s decision, blamed his removal on Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio, alleging that Akpabio had a hand in unfavorable court judgments against him and claimed that Akpabio intended to remove four other senators through the courts. Senator Abbo contested the court judgment, emphasizing his popularity and pledging to return to the Senate in 2027.
The Court of Appeal’s decision demonstrates the importance of adherence to electoral processes and the role of the judiciary in addressing electoral disputes.
