The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged the Lagos State Special Offences Court to dismiss an application by former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele challenging its jurisdiction. Represented by Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), the EFCC described the application as a delay tactic against the prosecution of economic and financial crimes.
Emefiele’s lawyer, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), argued that the state court lacks jurisdiction to hear charges of abuse of office related to his tenure as CBN Governor. Ojo also claimed that parts of the 26-count charges are unconstitutional and urged the court to dismiss the case. However, Oyedepo countered, stating that the EFCC has the authority to prosecute economic offences in Lagos, where the alleged crimes occurred.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Rahman Oshodi scheduled a ruling for January 7, 2025. Emefiele and his co-defendant, Herry Omoile, face charges of corruption, bribery, and fraudulent property documentation. Both have pleaded not guilty.
