In the latest 2024 Times Higher Education ranking, Covenant University, the University of Ibadan, and the Federal University of Technology, Akure have claimed top spots in Nigeria’s academic landscape.
Covenant University: The privately-owned institution has secured the coveted first position in Nigeria and has also made its mark globally, being among the top 1,000 universities in the world. It holds a place in the global ranking within the range of 801-1000.
University of Ibadan: Following closely behind, the University of Ibadan secured the second position in Nigeria, reaffirming its position as a leading academic institution.
Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA): FUTA clinched the third spot in the Nigerian rankings, highlighting its excellence in academia.
Here’s a glimpse of the rest of the top five universities in Nigeria:
- University of Lagos: The University of Lagos takes the fourth position in the country, maintaining its reputation as a prominent institution.
- University of Bayero: Bayero University secures the fifth spot in the Nigerian ranking, contributing to the country’s academic excellence.
The 2024 Times Higher Education World University Ranking evaluates universities worldwide using a comprehensive methodology. This methodology assesses institutions across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.
Other notable universities that have achieved top rankings in Nigeria include the University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Afe Babalola University, University of Benin, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Lagos State University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Port Harcourt.
Interestingly, among the top 15 universities in Nigeria, nine are located in the South West, two in the South East, two in the South South, one in the North West, and one in the North Central. This diversity showcases the country’s rich academic landscape and the contributions of various regions to higher education.
