Davido, the renowned Nigerian music artist, recently discussed why he is known as the ‘King of Afrobeats’ in Nigeria. In a recent interview, Davido emphasized his significant influence on the African music scene.
On October 21st, Davido took to his Instagram to share a video from his interview with ABC News, in which he eloquently expressed the global appeal of Afrobeats as a genre. When he was referred to as the “King of Afrobeats” in the video, Davido proudly responded, “It’s a taste of hard-earned glory, a sweet fruit of patience, and a journey that began during my salad days.”
He confidently asserted that he has gained recognition and accolades in the Western world. When discussing his music and lifestyle, the OBO Crooner mentioned that while most of his songs are deeply rooted in African culture, his lifestyle and enthusiasm for partying align with Western sensibilities.
He explained that during his formative years, he was inspired by Nigerian music pioneers like 2face, Psquare, and D’banj, all while grooving to the tunes of American rappers such as 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Nelly, and Ludacris.
However, Davido revealed that during his college years, he made a pivotal decision to return to Nigeria and embrace the emerging Afrobeats movement.
He captioned the post with the following words: “Seeing the way Afrobeats has changed the world and the impact we’ve had in music is beautiful! To see how respected and cherished our culture has become makes me so proud. Let’s make sure we protect it and keep building a borderless music world @abcnews.”
