Death Toll Rises to 21 in Kano Mosque Bombing

The death toll from the May 15 mosque bombing in Gadan village, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State, has increased to 21. Four more victims succumbed to their injuries, raising the figure from the 17 reported last week. A total of 25 early-morning worshippers were injured in the attack, with one dying on the day of the incident and 20 others later at Muhammed Specialists Hospital, Kano. Only four survivors remain hospitalized.

Alhaji Bature AbdulAziz, Chairman of Friends of the Hospital, announced the update during a sympathy visit by the Kano Business Community to the remaining victims. AbdulAziz praised the hospital’s management for their care and acknowledged contributions from various leaders and the community, including donations to the victims and other patients.

The attacker, 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar, used a locally-made bomb in the assault. The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has ordered his prosecution, indicating a readiness to sign a death warrant if the suspect is convicted. The police stated that the bombing was motivated by a prolonged family dispute over inheritance. Abubakar has been arraigned before an Upper Shari’a Court on charges of grievous hurt and culpable homicide.
