Sule Ukah, a vigilante, and two other people were reportedly killed at the Ubulu-Uku neighborhood in Delta State’s Aniocha South Local Government Area.
Reporters learned that the vigilante member was allegedly shot dead on Monday by people who were thought to be herders.
According to a community source who did not want his identity published for security reasons, the attackers besieged the bush at Ubulu-Uku-Issele-Uku Road before shooting the vigilante.
An informant divulged that, after the murder, individuals from the neighborhood vigilante and the hoodlums exchanged gunfire.
He added that in addition to the vigilante man who was shot, a commercial motorbike rider and two other women had also been wounded.
Two people were killed in the attack, according to state commissioner of police Wale Abass, who confirmed the death on Tuesday in Asaba while addressing press about the success of the command.
He declared, “On Monday, there was a legal violation in Ubulu-Uku. There had been a dispute between the vigilante and the locals. Two people have been killed as of today as a result of the ambush and shooting, and we have sent tactical commands to the neighborhood to restore order.
We also dispatched more troops after learning that the two factions have a sizable number of sympathizers.
“We want to encourage locals to avoid turning to self-help. Instead of turning to self-help, if there is an issue in the community, they should report it to the police.
Abass reported that while the inquiry was ongoing, the command has so far detained one person in relation to the attack.
The police chief listed his accomplishments as over 13 kidnappers, seven armed robbers, and 72 cult members detained along with the recovery of 54 firearms and 286 rounds of ammunition, and 195 cartridges.
