Delta Police Commence Operation to Remove Illegal Arms and Weapons

The Delta State Police Command has issued a call to the public, urging individuals who possess illegal and prohibited firearms to voluntarily surrender such weapons to any nearby police station, area command, or the state headquarters. This initiative aligns with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, and is part of the police’s efforts to curb the proliferation of firearms.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, has assured those involved in the wrongful possession of arms and light weapons that they will face “NO SANCTION” if they willingly submit these illegally possessed firearms to the police.

The police have emphasized that this exercise aims to reduce the number of firearms in circulation throughout the state. It also serves to prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands and being used by criminals to commit offenses, thereby ensuring the safety of the state’s residents.

CP Wale Abass has made it clear that the command has already initiated an operation to collect all illegal and prohibited firearms in circulation across the state. Those who take advantage of this opportunity will not face any punitive measures, arrests, or harassment. However, individuals who choose not to surrender their firearms will not be spared and will be prosecuted for unlawful possession of a firearm if apprehended. This includes any type of firearm, such as pistols, rifles, air weapons, or imitations (locally made guns, dummy guns, etc.).

CP Wale Abass encourages residents to report any suspicious activities related to firearms to their local police stations or through the Police Public Relations Office for a swift response and action. Informants can trust that their identities will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. This initiative aims to enhance public safety and reduce the unlawful use of firearms in the state.
