The brewing tension between Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, is poised to reach a critical juncture next week. Reports suggest that Deputy Governor Shaibu is set to be relocated to a new office situated outside the Government House.
The newly designated office is located at 7 Dennis Osadebey Avenue, in close proximity to the Government House. Interestingly, this building served as the office of the Edo State Public Procurement Office, which was inaugurated by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole on December 16, 2014. A plaque at the entrance commemorates the inauguration.
A prominent signboard bearing the inscription, ‘Office of the Deputy Governor,’ has been erected at the entrance of the building. Our correspondent observed ongoing renovations at the complex, including both the building and its surroundings. However, work had not yet commenced on the security post at the time of the visit.
One of the renovation workers, who chose to remain anonymous, indicated that the project was scheduled for completion by Monday. Interestingly, he expressed ignorance about the purpose of the building and how the signboard came to be placed at the entrance.
In response to these developments, Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, commented, “If there is a government signboard saying so, then it must be so.”
The relocation of the deputy governor’s office raises questions about the underlying dynamics between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu. As this situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how it will impact the political landscape in Edo State.
