Commercial motorcyclists have resumed their activities on major roads around Ojodu Berger in Lagos State, despite a ban imposed by the state government. The ban has not deterred motorcycle riders from using a section of Alhaji Kosoko Street in the area as their park, causing congestion and inconvenience for motorists.
A recent visit by Findqhosabi correspondent to the area revealed that a significant portion of Alhaji Kosoko Street was occupied by motorcycle riders, commonly known as “Okada” riders.
Residents have expressed their concerns about the activities of these riders. Ojo Bakare, a resident, highlighted the efforts of the state task force and LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) in dispersing the motorcyclists. However, the ban has not been effective in stopping them. Bakare suggested that the government should provide a designated park for these riders to alleviate road congestion.
Another resident, speaking anonymously, pointed out that the riders were forced to use the road as their park due to the lack of an alternative location. He called on the authorities to find a suitable place for them.
Residents are finding the activities of the Okada riders disruptive, and they have called for the deployment of road agencies to ensure orderliness.
The Director of Public Affairs for the Lagos State Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, acknowledged the ban on Okada operations in the state. He explained that enforcing the ban in the Ojodu area has been challenging because of its proximity to Ogun State, where some riders seek refuge to avoid arrest. Abdulraheem mentioned that they are working on developing a new strategy to address the congestion issue in the area.
