In a heartwarming revelation, renowned Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon recently opened up about the sweet beginnings of his love story with his wife, Damilola. The actor shared the delightful tale during a recent interview on the One-on-One show with Pulse.
Okanlawon disclosed that both he and his wife pursued degrees in Chemical Engineering at the University of Lagos, forming a connection that extended beyond academics. Despite their shared educational journey, Deyemi amusingly described a phase where he awaited his wife’s initiation of greetings, playfully naming it his ‘God’s gift to women’ period.
He humorously recounted the early days, saying, “So what happened was, I used to see her with girls that I know because they used to hang out. You know how girls used to hang out in cliques…So they’d be walking down the hallway, and I’d be walking towards them, and they would stop, and I would say hello to every single one of them except my wife because she won’t say hello first.”
Eventually, Deyemi gathered the courage to approach her, and despite their different paths after finishing school, their lives continued to intersect. The actor explained, “We got out of school, and because we had the same circle of friends, people were getting married, so we were always on bridal trains together.”
The turning point in their relationship occurred at a wedding where Deyemi went to present a cake made by his mother. Damilola, his future wife, happened to be attending the wedding as it was her cousin’s ceremony. Deyemi recalled the moment, saying, “And her cousin who was my friend said to her ‘Can you please go get something for my friend to eat?’ And she couldn’t say no, and you could see the look on her face, and I was basking in it.”
Their connection deepened, and about a year later, they met again, leading to a romantic journey that culminated in marriage. Despite Deyemi’s career transition from a 9-5 job to becoming a successful actor, his wife stood by him, embracing the unexpected path they embarked on together.
