Diiadem Criticized for Dollar Increase Question

Renowned businesswoman, Adeola Diiadem, has found herself at the center of online scrutiny after posing what appeared to be an innocent question regarding the recent increase in the dollar exchange rate.

Taking to her Instagram story, the brand owner criticized local vendors who, in her opinion, hiked the prices of their goods in response to the dollar’s rise. Adeola questioned the logic behind such increases, arguing that it does not directly impact the cost of basic commodities like catfish in the market.

Expressing frustration, Diiadem wrote, “Some Nigerians will not cease to amaze me. How does the dollar affect catfish in the market? How does dollar increase affect basic things?? I’m tired of people taking advantage of everything!!! Until hunger finish everybody then these idiots increasing food stuff will learn!!! How will the poor survive???? We need to help ourselves and not keep doing ourselves!!! Even market people that don’t understand what this dollar issue is all about are taking advantage of it!!! This is a lesson for y’all to buy Nigerian!!!!!!”

Adeola Diiadem’s remarks, however, sparked a backlash online, with many social media users schooling Diiadem on the intricate ways in which the dollar increase can indeed impact various aspects of the market. The incident serves as a reminder of the sensitivity surrounding economic issues and the importance of nuanced discussions in the public domain. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether Adeola Diiadem will address the criticism or clarify her stance on the matter.

Some reactions to her post below

@CoadedIBK wrote: “It’s basic economics. The cat fish seller had to sell 100 pieces to take care of all his finances. Now, fuel costs 3 times than before, federal universities now costs a lot, he now has to sell 400 to take care of the same expenses but people are not buying like b4 so he increases the price by 4 to meet up.

Remember the cat fish seller also buys rice for 80k now, he must survive. It’s that simple”

@LaksideJunior noted: “Shey una dey see say school no be scam now.”

@gabbieberyl1 added: “The fact is they will not learn, they have nothing to learn, they are clearly not related to the people affected, just like the government is not blood related to any of us”

@Mickyiv4 advised: “Just as English & maths is compulsory to pass WAEC, Economics should be made compulsory too. The ministry of education should consider this. History should be added as well.”
